Celebrating National Poetry Month at Block Party Poetry!

The sun shone on our inaugural Block Party Poetry Series this past Saturday as 40 poet-athletes gathered at three locations across New York City to perform original poetry, reconnect with coaches and teammates, and celebrate National Poetry Month with America SCORES New York.

This unique first-time collaboration, a partnership made possible by New York City Open Streets and the NYPD, brought young people from 10 schools throughout Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to asphalt stages across their communities for the first time since February 2020.

Up in the Bronx, poet-athletes from PS 382 shared their original works on a quiet street alongside professional poets Shay, J (The Everyday Bite), Shakira (Lady Kay), and youth guest poet Karla.

Over in Harlem's Johnny Hartman Plaza, Mott Hall, Dos Puentes and PS 98 poet-athletes from wrote and recited some of their favorite poems and shared the stage with professional poets Hattress Barbour and Nora Oz.

Down in Brooklyn, our poet-athletes from PS 139, PS 249, and PS 375 were performing right in the community. Professional poets Bobby Sanchez, Haunz Noire, Jaecee the Poet, and Shanice Ariel kicked off the day and inspired our poet-athletes to take the stage!
