On Saturday, June 1, over 800 America SCORES New York poet-athletes took to the fields at the picturesque Columbia University athletic complex in Inwood, Upper Manhattan, Baker Field, to take part in Jamboree 2019.
This end-of-Spring celebration is an annual highlight at ASNY and all across our national network, combining soccer and community service in perfect weather and brilliant color.
Our 40 youth teams traveled from Harlem, Inwood, Washington Heights, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to join this end-of-year celebration. This event gives our poet-athletes the opportunity to shine a light on the service learning projects that they have worked on throughout the spring, as well as their soccer technique that they have fine tuned throughout the season. As our largest program event of the year, it was heavily anticipated by poet-athletes and coaches alike, and the excitement was palpable throughout the day!
Program Director Zach Gomes and Soccer Program Manager Chloe Wheeler kicked off the morning with an "America SCORES" chant that roared through the stadium and kicked the day into high gear! Our elementary and middle school teams took turns presenting their service-learning projects in small groups, and tackled topics such as ocean pollution, anti-bullying, homelessness, and some even held fundraisers for local food banks and St. Jude's Children's Hospital!
Then the games began! Each team had at least three games to show off their skills, and even though the competition was fierce, all the games were filled with fair play!
Our awards ceremony was as exciting as every, with trophies for Most Improved Coach going to Coach Amini from PS 161, Best Coaching Team going to PS 98 coaches, Most Positive Coach going to Coach Jimenez from Mott Hall, and the Volunteer Award going to Eve Pennington, who has been volunteering regularly for ASNY since last year's summer program!
